Food Conversion

There are a lot of differences in the names of food between Australia and the US.  The below is a handy conversion chart.

Standard Ingredients

Australian US
Plain Flour All Purpose Flour
Self Raising Flour Self-Rising Flour
Bicarbonate of Soda Baking Soda
Desiccated Coconut Shredded, Dried Coconut
Caster Sugar Granulated Sugar
Cocoa Cocoa Powder
Icing Sugar Confectioner’s Sugar or Powdered Sugar

Branded Ingredients

Name Description
Cool Whip No direct equivalent; try whipped cream if stability isn’t an issue or try making a substitute.
Graham Crackers A sweet biscuit often used for crusts; in the UK try digestives or in Australia, either digestives or other sweet biscuits (scotch fingers or wheatmeal, depending on the recipe)

Measurements

Measurement Equivalent
1 stick butter 113 grams or 1/2 cup
1 metric cup (most used on this site) 250ml or 12.5 AU Tablespoons
1 US cup 240ml or 12 AU Tablespoons or 8.12 fluid ounces
1 tablespoon 3 teaspoons or 15ml or 1/2 fluid ounce (In Australia, a tablespoon is 20ml or 4 teaspoons)
